2025 has been a hard year so far. We’ve said goodbye to a dear cousin we spent a lot of time with, laughed with, and loved deeply. Also just last week the loss a dear friend who was more like family. The ache of those losses linger. That kind of grief doesn’t just touch the edges of your life—it goes deep. It sits heavy in quiet moments, surprising you with tears when you least expect them.
And yet—I know I’m not alone. Maybe you know that ache too. Whether it’s losing someone you love, a health diagnosis that knocked the wind out of you. A relationship that’s been strained or shattered. Carrying any of this weight, it seems life can knock the breath right out of us. Maybe you’re not sure how to hold on to hope in a world that keeps shifting beneath your feet.
But here’s what I know: God’s light doesn’t disappear just because the night comes. In fact, that’s when it shines the brightest.
The light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.” – John 1:5 (KJV)
What does this mean?
- “The light shines in darkness.” The light refers to Jesus Christ, who came into a spiritually dark world full of sin, confusion, and despair. His presence, truth, and righteousness shined into that darkness.
- “And the darkness comprehended it not” — The word “comprehended” (Greek: katalambanō) can mean “understood” or “overcame.” Many scholars believe it carries both meanings here:
- The world didn’t understand or recognize the true Light (Jesus).
- The darkness couldn’t overcome or extinguish His light.
Jesus is the light that darkness can’t defeat or dim. Even when people didn’t recognize Him or rejected Him, He continued shining. And He still does.
Encouragement for today:
This verse reminds us that darkness can’t win. No matter how heavy the grief, fear, or pain—Jesus still shines, and His light will never be put out. Even if you feel overwhelmed, God’s presence is stronger. His light is with you. Call on Him. Ask Him to show himself strong because you need Him.
Even in the darkest seasons, God walks with us. He doesn’t leave us to figure it out alone. His Word becomes our flashlight—showing us one step at a time, steadying us with truth, holding us with hope.
Can I remind you of something beautiful? Jesus encountered a woman at a well.
“Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” John 4:13–14 (KJV)
Jesus spoke these words to a woman who was weary in every way. She had come to the well carrying the burdens of her past, hoping for just enough water to get through the day. But Jesus offered her something eternal—living water that would satisfy the thirst of her soul and never run dry. He offered her eternal life with Him.
This promise is for you as well.

Jeremy thank you for your comment. I find even in the deepest shadows of my past, God’s light shines brighter. His grace is greater than any regrets, and His love writes a new story over every broken chapter. John 1:5 KJV The light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. Your heart can be free—redeemed, not by your resilience, but by His unfailing mercy. Yes I know God’s light that’s within me shines brighter than any storm that has ever fallen. If you don’t already know this you can know, as well. John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17) For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world but that the world through him might be saved. Thanks for visiting.
